Course Information
What You'll Learn
Deep diving introduces additional planning, equipment, and physiological considerations. This course helps you understand those factors and apply them during actual dives.
- Planning dives beyond normal Open Water training depths
- Equipment considerations for deeper diving
- Depth, time, and gas-management considerations
- Physics and physiology associated with deeper dives
- Use of dive computers and depth-monitoring equipment
- Emergency procedures for deep diving
- Safe ascent and safety-stop procedures
Open Water Training
The course includes open-water training designed to progressively develop your experience with deeper diving.
You'll plan and conduct dives with your Instructor while monitoring depth, time, gas supply, and other factors that become increasingly important as depth increases.
Training may include dives beyond 60 feet, with course dives limited to the depth appropriate for the training and a maximum recreational depth of 130 feet.
Skills You'll Practice
- Testing and verifying dive equipment before deeper dives
- Planning and maintaining established depth and time limits
- Monitoring gas consumption throughout the dive
- Maintaining awareness of depth, time, and computer information
- Responding to simulated underwater emergencies
- Conducting controlled ascents
- Completing appropriate safety stops
Why Take Deep Diver?
Deeper dive sites can include walls, wrecks, geological formations, and other environments that are unavailable within shallower Open Water training limits.
The goal of this course is not simply to go deeper. It is to give you the knowledge and experience needed to recognize the additional considerations involved and make sound decisions when planning deeper recreational dives.

Frequently asked questions
How deep can I dive during this course?
Training progresses beyond the 60-foot depth range associated with entry-level Open Water training. Course dives are planned within appropriate training limits and do not exceed the recreational maximum depth of 130 feet.
Is this a technical diving course?
No. Deep Diver is a recreational diving specialty. The course develops the knowledge and skills needed for deeper recreational dives while remaining within recreational depth and no-decompression limits.
Does this course count toward SDI Advanced Diver?
Yes. The SDI Deep Diver certification can count as a specialty toward the SDI Advanced Diver Development program.
