Course Information

What You'll Learn

Wreck diving requires additional awareness, planning, and techniques beyond a typical recreational dive.

  • Planning an external-survey wreck dive
  • Evaluating a wreck and the surrounding environment
  • Selecting appropriate finning techniques near a wreck
  • Using guidelines around a wreck site
  • Deploying and managing a guideline
  • Maintaining awareness of position and surroundings
  • Creating an ascent line using a guideline and lift bag
Training at Lake Hydra

Open-water training for this course is conducted at Lake Hydra. Students will use the School Bus and Silver Comet wrecks to apply wreck-survey and guideline techniques in an actual open-water environment.

Using two different wrecks gives students the opportunity to apply the same fundamental concepts while adapting to different structures and dive situations.

External Survey vs. Wreck Penetration

This course focuses on external wreck diving. Students learn to survey, navigate, and work around wrecks while remaining in open water with direct access to the surface.

Wreck penetration and overhead-environment diving require additional training and are not conducted as part of this course.

Guideline and Ascent-Line Skills

Students will practice deploying and managing a guideline as part of their wreck-diving training.

The course also introduces the use of a guideline and lift bag to establish an ascent line, giving divers additional experience with equipment and procedures that can be useful when diving wreck sites.
