Move Beyond No-Decompression Limits

Decompression Procedures introduces experienced divers to planned staged decompression diving. The course develops the planning, equipment, gas-management, team, and in-water skills needed to conduct technical dives that require scheduled decompression stops.

Your first step into planned decompression diving. This course moves beyond traditional recreational no-decompression diving and introduces the procedures and discipline required for staged decompression, with training conducted to a maximum depth of 150 feet.

Course Information

What You'll Learn

Decompression diving requires more detailed planning, additional equipment considerations, and disciplined team procedures.

  • Planning staged decompression dives
  • Understanding decompression schedules
  • Selecting and managing decompression gases
  • Dive-computer and decompression-planning considerations
  • Gas planning and contingency planning
  • Equipment configuration for decompression diving
  • Team awareness and communication
  • Emergency and problem-management procedures
In-Water Training

Open-water training focuses on applying technical dive plans while maintaining precise buoyancy, trim, awareness, and team communication.

You'll practice the procedures used to conduct planned staged decompression dives, including pre-dive checks, following a decompression schedule, gas-switching procedures, and maintaining control throughout the ascent.

Technical Diving Skills

The course reinforces fundamental diving skills at the level of precision required for technical diving.

  • Stable buoyancy and horizontal trim
  • Efficient propulsion and finning techniques
  • Gas-switching procedures
  • SMB or lift-bag deployment
  • Team positioning and communication
  • Gas-loss and equipment-failure procedures
  • Responding to changes from the planned decompression profile
Dive Planning and Contingencies

Technical dive planning considers not only the intended dive but also how the team will respond when something does not go according to plan.

Training addresses gas requirements, decompression planning, equipment failures, lost gas, omitted or altered decompression, navigation problems, and other situations that may require the dive team to modify the original plan.

Helpful answers

Frequently asked questions

Is this a recreational diving specialty?

No. Decompression Procedures is technical-diving training. It introduces planned staged decompression and expands beyond normal recreational no-decompression diving limits.

How deep does the course go?

The course allows training to a maximum depth of 150 feet. Actual training depths are determined by the Instructor, dive plan, conditions, and progression of the course.

Do I need Advanced Nitrox first?

The TDI Decompression Procedures and Advanced Nitrox courses complement one another and together form an important foundation for additional technical-diving training. Your Instructor can help determine the appropriate training sequence for you.

Is this a pathway to additional technical training?

Yes. Decompression Procedures is a foundational technical-diving course and can be part of the progression toward more advanced TDI training.
